Landscape Services

Landscape services

Landscape work can be a new lawn, a paved path or a whole garden built from bare ground. Putting the same questions to every business keeps their quotes about the same job.

BusinessIts name, and who you spoke to.
01Will you see the site before giving a price?A quote from photos alone may change once they arrive.
02What exactly does the quote cover?Ask for each part of the job listed on its own line.
03Which paving, edging or timber are you pricing?Get the product name, so another business can price the same thing.
04Is clearing and levelling the ground part of the price? And removal of old paving, stumps or turf.
05Will you need machinery, and can it get into the yard?Narrow side paths can mean more work by hand.
06Is the rubbish taken away at the end?Ask whether that is in the quote or charged after.
07If anything in the job needs approval, who applies?Ask them to name what it is.
08Do you offer upkeep once the work is finished?Mowing, pruning or a check once the plants settle in.
Ask each business the same questions and write the answers side by side. Printed, the sheet fills one page, with a column for each of three quotes. From landscapeservices.com.au, a concept page.

Comparing quotes

A short quote with one total is hard to compare with a long one that lists every part. Ask every business to break the work into the same parts, such as ground work, paving, planting and cleanup, and write each part in its row.

Where one quote is far lower, look for what is missing from it rather than assuming it is better value.

Before the work begins

Agree in writing on the plan, the materials and the finish date. If anything changes once work starts, ask for the new price before the change is made.

Clear the area of outdoor furniture, pots and toys, and tell the business where they can park and where they can stack materials.

Where to check

  • ABN Lookup, Australian Business Register

Shows whether a business's ABN is active or cancelled, its business type and its GST status, and the Register says the public can use it to check a business before buying.
